Repost: MARC JEFFREY "Playtime" (US, 1990)

Back in 80`s , Marc Jeffrey was the leader (singer + guitarist) of New York`s BAND OF OUTSIDERS, a group that never became well known (even in the underground circuit ) and earned some middling only sympathy from ones explored the american post punk situation and the psych revivalism of that era . Band Of Outsiders disbanded before the turn of new decade, leaving behind them few LP`s / EP`s and a collaboration with CERTAIN GENERAL ( amazing 80`s NY post no-wave band). Afterwards Marc released "PLAYTIME", an old fashioned psych-folk-art-pop gem, superior than the previous works, but unfortunately, same fated with them.

Its excellent 60`s-influenced songsmithness places "PLAYTIME" near the most loving works of psych archetypes like LOVE , SPIRIT, etc. Nevertheless the inspiration and the whole artistic atmosphere leave no doubts about the originality of this work. As if predating the lo-fi attidute of 90's "PLAYTIME" hides its brilliance under a very modest sound profile... and it definitely worths discovering.

I riped it from my (Nate Starkman & Son Greece) vinyl so you prepare for some...hissing.

Nico's Last Concert - Fata Morgana (1988)

Fata Morgana - Desert Sounds In The Planetarium

"Fata Morgana" is, as fate wanted, Nico's final work. A live performance, or rather an audio-visual show at planetarium Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwatre that happened, as part of the festival activities for "Berlin - Cultural European Capital", in early summer of 1988, just few weeks only before Nico's sudden passing away.
The theme of "Fata Morgana" is the moon deserts. Nico sings and plays (indian) organ, the rest instruments played by the band Faction (see also Nico/Faction collaboration on 1985 "Camera Obscura" album).
All compositions are written specifically for the needs of this event, apart from the ending "You Forget To Answer" which bridges the past with the berlin sky of that night absolutely shiveringly.

Nico's Last Concert was released initially on cd in 1994 and reissued recently (2011).

Lutz Ulbrich, organisator and producer of that performance writes about "Fata Morgana":

"In 1987 Martina Marx and i had the idea to organize 'fata morgana - desert sounds in the planetarium' for the festival year 'berlin - kulturstadt europas 1988'.
We at once thought of nico, who i had known for years since we had worked and lived together in the 70s. She had often told me how impressed she had been by the Death Valley, where she hung out with Jim Morisson and where she had been working on the film 'la cicatrice interieure' by Philippe Garrel, which they filmed at locations like Death Valley, Iceland and the Sahara, a picture of which you can see on the cover of 'Desertshore'. When i called her in Manchester to ask her to compose "music for a desert", she spontaneously proposed the stone desert of the moon as a theme. It was obvious, that her magical aura would enable her to turn the whole planetarium into a moon desert and become the highlight of the festival.
Nico arrived on the 4th of June together with her musicians the Faction and during the two days of rehearsal every listener became enthusiastic about the creative, dynamic and intense way in which Nico & the Faction were working.
Dr. Werner Celnic, director of the planetarium, who operated the optical effects and who completed the music with wonderful pictures and films of the moon, seemed to be in his element. To add to this we had installed 360° sound system which treated a unique sound event.
The  6th of June 1988 Nico gave a magnificent double concert in a sold out planetarium, from which this is the mix: Nico's last concert."

HOUSEHUNTERS "Cuticles" (12'') & "Warp Factor 13" (7'')

For most the name of Jowe Head recalls bands as Swell Maps, Television Personalities, or even The Palookas. Disguised here as Stefan Vogel, Jowe Head led the indie weirdos HOUSEHUNTERS to something like an amusing parody or rather a funny recycling of the past.
HOUSEHUNTERS got inspiration from mythic side of rock'n'roll, from trash-pop culture, punk, psychobilly, the 60's he-&-she duets, the sudden innocence of early indie heartbeats and a lot more...
They fed the frenzy of their time with three singles, an LP... and the small indie Hollow Planet label they ran...

HOUSEHUNTERS: Stefan Vogel (Jowe Head) guitar-vocals / Mercedes Mole vocals / Trudi Holt keyboards / Lucy Cameron sax / Stark Zoomer (Jeff Bloom) drums / Lindsey bass

CPT. KIRK &. " Reformhölle " (GER, 1992)

CPT KIRK & was a political band from Hamburg, active from mid-80s to mid-90s. Although they left only a small number of works (mainly released from Hamburg's label WHAT SO FUNNY ABOUT), they are often mentioned as one of the sound architects of the early 90s alternative germanophone deutschrock scene. The reason is this album.

"Geldunter", (7''), 1991

PORCELAIN BUS "The Well Is Dry" 7''(AUS, 1987)

Back to 80s australian stuff with another Citadel release. Alternative, garage-psych influenced band PORCELAIN BUS made this two-track single in 1987. Both tracks are among their best. None of them appears in any of their two full albums ("Talking To God", 1988 and "Fragile", 1990)... but can be found instead in the 1990 compilation "Sacred Relics"... and that's where are taken from for the needs of this post.

Aκολουθεί το δεύτερο, πιο διευρυμένο και τολμηρό "ΤΗΕ FURTHER ADVENTURE OF DER SHRIMPKIN".

JACK (1990)

THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF DER SHRIMPKIN (1995)

AUTUMNFAIR "Glaciers and Gods" (US, 1991)

an Independent Project Records release

Six-track release from late 80's recordings of Savage Republic's bassist/guitarist THOM FUHRMANN and bassist VAL HALLER (Flying Lizards, Electric Chairs, etc) with additional percussions from Biff Sanders (Fourwaycross) and Jeremy Goff. The band existed the period 1986-89 with various members, participating (along with Marnie, Dark Arts and Soul Brothers), to the Nate Starkman & son compilation "The October Country"(1987). Using some old Savage Republic tricks, being pompous at times, and spoiled by some 4AD-like stylistic atmosphere, GLACIERS AND GODS is, in my opinion, a not so much interesting work. Nevertheless, "Arterial", one of the best tracks, is here:

THE UNDERNEATH "The Imp Of The Perverse" (UK, 1986)

The predecessor EP of UNDERNEATH's "LUNATIC DAWN OF THE DISMANTLER" is nothing less than another mysterious KARL BLAKE work... and another unsual el Records release.
Covers of Arthur Brown's "Fire" and Honeycombs's 60`s hit "Have I The Right?"... a tribute song to Black Sabbath ("Black Roots")... and finally some poetry recitation into a noir-industrial atmosphere ("Short Term Agreement").

Special thanks to good friend ANDY for providing the material. Without his generous assistance this post would not have been done.

PHILLIP BOA & THE VOODOO CLUB "Philister" (1985) / "Aristocracie" (1986) , Germany

Alternative alchemies of noise, eclectisism, strong pop instinct and significant male/female/voodoo vocals. A mixture of fresh, daring ideas, imagination and innocence that found its peak in BOA`s first two LPs: "Philister" (1985) and "Aristocracie" (1986).

GLASS EYE "Bent by Nature" (US,1988)

Impressive, ahead of its time work from Texas outfit that combined cleverly elements from many places ( indie rock, funk, folk, experimental), escaping definition by any of its influences. Very eclectic approach, electric-acoustic contrasts and angular forms. Expanding arrangements add keyboards, accordion, trumpet. Much of the spirit of their works started being applied massively some years later in alternative rock, GLASS EYE remained though little known.

ORTHOTONICS "Wake up, you must remember" (US,1984)

As requested, here it is the first LP of R.I.O. related ORTHOTONICS. Started as a trio (Danny Finney-sax, Paul Watson-trumpet, Pippin Barnett-drums), but after addition singer-guitarist Rebby Sharp (and Tom Carson on bass), they bridged their free/improv origins with alternative rock. Angular forms leave space for a post punk minimalism rich in jazz colours, while the horns support the tight rhythmic character of the songs or invade the picture developing mellow themes and short, witty dialogues.
A fresh, pop edged, experimental work (mixed by Fred Frith), that brings in mind avant new-wave sounds from the other side of the Atlantic.

DROWNING POOL "Satori" (US,1987)

When those transatlantic darkwave winds, carrying with them english fog & european melancholy, blew over the folk-psych Californian grounds, many strangely beautiful "flowers" begun blooming in the area. Drowning Pool was one of the most extraordinary and (for their quality) the less known. Most representative work the double LP "SATORI", a collection of tracks most of which had already found shelter in previous obscure releases (cassettes, EPs, etc.)
Summing up eclectically the main 80`s inclinations (new wave, electronic, ambient, experimental, psych, world...) and adding a touch of love for 70`s prog, SATORI finds an hypnotic and ceremonial way to consolidate its influences into the local psych (pagan) manifestations of landscape adoration.
If you have loved bands like Savage Republic, Fourwaycross, 17 Pygmies, For Against, Red Temple Spirit, Shiva Burlesque... try Drowning Pool and very soon, i think, you`ll have to add SATORI to the pantheon.

KAMPEC DOLORES "Levitation" (HUN, 1990)

KAMPEC DOLORES is one of the most important rock bands that have been acting since 80`s in eastern (communistic then) Europe. They formed 1984 and attracted a small attention of western audiences supporting NICO in her 1985 Budapest concert, and participating PERE UBU`s reunion tour (1988). Dutch anarcho-punk collective THE EX helped them to release their first self-titled album. "LEVITATION" was the second. Locally acclaimed, released internationally on vinyl by RECOMMENDED records (RER MEGACORP) and reissued later, along with the first album in one cd.
Traditional hungarian folk & eastern european jazz elements plus unfamiliar sounds & melodic qualities of hungarian language give an exquisite flavour to an already amazing balance between alternative 80`s underground rock and avant/R.I.O.
Later works went occasionally more experimental ( improvisation, vocal eccentricities etc), the band though, finally, focused on a world-folk settled down direction, more ethnic/ethereal, less underground passionated, still very good... but it is here, the early albums, i believe, that you can full enjoy the most furious and condensed alchemies of this avant rock-goes-peripheral-goes-global band, which has chosen to be called kampec dolores - the end of pains, whatever optimistic or pessimistic this may means.

KAMPEC DOLORES core members are GABI KENDERESI:vocals, violin, and ex Kontroll Csoport (early 80`s important hungarian alt-rock band), CSABA HAJNOCZY: guitars, bass, etc.

HOME & GARDEN "History & Geography" (US,1984)

PERE UBU`s hybernation years, while frontman David Thomas was releasing a series of experimental solo works, founding Pere Ubu drummer Scott Krauss and bassist Tony Maimone were giving life to a lower ambitions project called HOME & GARDEN. With friends contribution they released an experimental, ambient flowing EP called "How I Spent my Vacation". Gradually things got more serious and with addition of guitarist Jim Jones and singer/lyricist Jeff Morrison, became more like a band, and made the LP "History & Geography". Using various keys & synths they brought new, strange, technological and yet exotic sounds and noises in marriage with songforms and alternative pop structures. Jeff Morrison`s poetic-intellectual-spoken style and his lyrics for unusual subjects (Marco Polo, King John, monkey towns, penguins...) reinforced the dreamy, really historical & geografical spirit of an album that carried Pere Ubu`s avant view to a less garagy and more atmospheric level. Briefly, an excellent work that would be great mistake if ignored as one more of family`s byworks. It really needs no support of PERE UBU`s fame to be more widely known.
After History & Geography, few more HOME & GARDEN releases followed (singles, EPs, compilation tracks, etc), but since core members jointed PERE UBU`s reunion, the band gradually diminished activities.

Home & Garden, 1985

MOONDOG JR "every day i wear a greasy black feather on my hat" (BEL, 1995)

The art, blues, jazz, noir side of dEUS early days bloomed for good in 1995 with this singular album, Stef kamil Carlens (dEUS) and musicians from bands Flowers for breakfast & Kiss my Jazz (just before go a ZITA SWOON indie career), released under moniker MOONDOG Jr. America`s modern music mythology as defined after Dylan-Beefheart-Waits actions is at the centre of their vision. They approach it with an imaginative playing and an alternative spirit, rich in creative but dark/sad mooded also ideas. Moondog Jr`s bitter viewing narrations draws urban noir sceneries where things have a double face and beside after hours sharpened words...old sorrows, like dogs, are roving all night around.

MOONDOG Jr were: Stef K.Carlens(guit/piano/percussion/voc) - Aarich Jespers(drums/pipes) - Tom Pintens(guit/harmonium/piano/clarinette/voc) - Benjamin Boutreur(sax) - Thomas De Smet(upright bass).
