The Tiptons is an all-women sax quartet which features Jessica Lurie (alto, tenor, vocals), Tina Richerson (baritone, vocals), Sue Orfield (tenor, vocals) and Amy Denio (alto, vocals), with the latter -member of so many avant, rio, impro and world jazz oufits- to be the most well known name here. The line up is completed by guests percussions.
The band, active since 1988, was formerly known as Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet. Original members Lurie and Denio are the main composers. The Tiptons have released 10 cd's so far, the most recent one is "Strange Flower", (2010).

The quartet describes its music as: “... a high energy blend of ‘twisted folk’ with world music, second line, funk, jazz, and Eastern European influences thrown into the mix of mainly original material.”

NED SUBLETTE: Adventures In Black & White

Ned Sublette is a texan multi-talented artist, musician, photographer, producer, labelman, musicologist... Since 70s he's been living in New York, where he has collaborated with many important avant artists (Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, John Cage, Love Of Life Orchestra, Lenny Pickett a.o.) and also has written books about the history of american and the latin-american music.
As a performer and composer he is mainly interested to create forms where his "white" country-western roots style encounters the pulse of latin music (cuban, carribean etc.) and the voices of "black" America.

Two of his most significant works are the albums "Ships At Sea, Sailors And Shoes" (Triple Earth, 1993) and "Monsters From The Deep" (Triple Earth, 1997), both collaborations with lyricist Lawrence Weiner and the soul-vocal group of The Persuasions.

"Smarnamisa! Resia Valley Music" (1997)

Resia Valley is a very small municipality-region lying in North Italy near the borders with Slovenia and Austria. Resian people, who nowadays are numbered in about a thousand, have slavic origins and speak a very idiomatic slavic dialect ("rozajanski"), strongly influenced by archaic  lingual elements. Located between the two peninsulas (the balkan and the italian), but in fact isolated due to its surrounded by mountains alpine position, Resia has, in spite of its size, a rich folkloric history with unique customs and traditions.
"Smarnamisa!" compilation, an Avant Records release, is a rare document of traditional resian music created by fiddle ("citara"), cello ("bunkula"), "percussive'' feet, vocals, narrations etc.
Perhaps attractive mainly to ones with traditional folk tastes or ethno-musicological interests, but valuable and sympathetic as valuable and sympathetic a voice of an unseen dot of the world can be.

UNE ANCHE PASSE "Port D' Attache" (FRA, 1995)

Traditional musics from Italy, South France, Spain, jewish diaspora... plus compositions of Nino Rota, George Brassens and others... revitalised idiosyncratically by the south french reed & brass Une Anche Passe orchestra.

"Port D'Attache" is the second "mare nostrum" trip for an ensemble that trusts the "essences" of multicultural folk mediterranean "air" to build its own borderless sound language.

JAVIER PAXARIÑO "Perihelion" + "Temura"

Spanish wind player (flutes, clarinets, saxes...) and composer Javier Paxariño makes music based, mainly, on the traditions and the history of mediterranean civilizations. His explorations through space and time bring in light elements from cultures grown in Iberica, South Europe, North Africa, Balkans, Middle East... and fuse them in seductive world-jazz-folk forms.

These efforts -that although don't seek a new, genuine language, they lack no originality-  reach their best with albums "Temura" (1994) and "Perihelion" (1996) , two works that demonstrate Paxariño's ability for composing clarity and imaginative arrangements, perfectly balanced between ethno-colours and modern instrumentation.
"Temura", influenced by judaic esoterica, is named after a cabbalistic technique to extract hidden meanings from the mystery of sentence. "Perihelion", on the other hand, focused on the timeless worship of light, recalls the ancient sun ceremonies of mediterranean and subsaharian lands.

Sounds In Restless Motion: The music of ANO KATO Records

Florina Brass Band

Lefteris Agouridakis (Diotima)

F. Floridis, M. Siganidis, K. Vomvolos (Wutu Wupatu)

Ano Kato Records was formed in 1984 in Thessaloniki. It is one of the oldest independent greek labels, definitely the most historical one in Northern Greece.

Due to the fact that Ano Kato has always supported in their first steps, artists derived from different music cultures, its repertoire displays great variety of sounds and idiosyncratic styles.

By starting of sublabel ρει records in early 90s, Ano Kato entered deeper the exploration of jazz, traditional, contemporary music and the space between, creating in parallel, innovative ideas, rediscoveries, international collaborations, experimental projects... the ground, briefly, on which the most interesting Ano Kato works finally were born.

Focused mostly on the ρει spirit, here it is our introduction to Ano Kato music:

HiM " Lila ", EP (US, 2003)

HiM is a very interesting avant outfit behind of which we find percussionist, multi-instrumentalist DOUG SCHARIN, an important musician who has played among others with Codeine, June of 44, Directions In Music, Rex, and generally have had a remarkable role in the middlenineties evolution of post-rock. Earlier works of the band have origins to dub, krautrock, experimental ambient, gradually though, their sound becomes jazzier, cleaner and more atmospheric.
"LILA" is a 2003, highly melodic, mini work with world influences and a strong jazz feeling (Rob Mazurek plays the cornet here), in similar vein to that year's full album "Many In High Places Are Not Well", which we also recommend. Necessary though for a deeper contact are earlier works, especially their debut album "Egg" (1995).

ALAIN GIBERT "Chariot D'Or" (FRA, 1995)

The art of ALAIN GIBERT is related with both traditional musics and avant-garde. As a search for a new music idiom, it explores territories between folk memory and folk imagination. "CHARIOT D'OR" is one of the most characteristic acts of this quest. Recorded the period 1994-95, the album comprises 14 tracks, four of which are based on traditional themes derived from french region AUVERGNE (south France), while the rest are Gibert's compositions. The composer plays piano, trombone and sings in the strange local dialect. The line up includes also BRUNO CHEVILLON on contrabass, JEAN-LOUIS MATINIER on accordion and the well known LOUIS SCLAVIS on clarinet and soprano saxophone. The music, jazzy-acoustic, turns to advantage the simplicity of sounds and extends the soul of old traditions towards innovatism and improvisation without spoiling the original warm folk feeling. However, "L' Auvergne imaginee" is rather the place where the "old" and the "new", have lost their meanings.

ANDY STATMAN: Forms Of Spiritual World Music

Statman's urban folk: from jewish mystics and bluegrass to impressionistic jazz and world eclectisism

ANDY STATMAN is a rare occasion of a multiculturalist, innovator and strongly rooted to the folk traditions artist. By a very young age, while he was already an accomplished bluegrass mandolinist, attracted by the free/spiritual jazz of Ayler and Coltrane and begun, as a saxophonist, his first adventures in avant-jazz and ethnic music. As a Jew, on the other hand, he involved with the old jewish music and, developing his clarinet virtuosity under the guidance of great Klezmer teachers (as David Tarras), he finally became one of the masters of the genre.

His approach though, in hebrew traditions hasn't been preserving the music of the past. On the contrary, Statman's art is in a constant search for an expansive form which extracts the timeless from the ancient jewish tunes and blends it with his many other influences.
This highly melodic world trip draws pictures of an urban-folk-bluesy american landscape and leads back to Balkan, Mediterrania, Eastern Europe, places where Chassidic culture bloomed. It has for sure its strong references to a collective memory, it is though the very personal journey of someone who attains to put to question our historical-geografical music certainties, communicating with us on the base of an old/new spiritual language.

HASIDIC NEW WAVE " From The Belly Of Abraham" (US,2001)

Τhe fourth LP of HNW, this time with participation of senegalese hand drummers Aliounne Faye & Yakar Rhythms. Listen to it here.
Other HNW works at this blog are: "Psycho-Semitic" and " Kabalogy"

CICALA MVTA "CHING DONG, The Return of Japanese Street Music" (JAP, 1998)

streets of global parading

Avant - improv - folk - punk - prog - jazz - new orleans - klezmer - gipsy - balkan - east asian.... you need a train of words to describe.... music that starts from japanese street performances (chindon) and goes globally... madly.
The sound of CICALA MVTA is developed around the mainman/composer WATARU OHKUMA`s distinctive clarinet improvisations, by an unsual line up of musicians playing the tuba, percussions, fiddle, cello, electric guitar... The compositions are complexed, rich in multicultural references, with many unexpected turns and changes; the "street" feeling though, (lyrical, dramatic, bufooning ) is always present...
"CHING DONG..." is the german version of the first self-titled CICALA MVTA album.
Moniker CICALA MVTA honours the memory of the great, early 20th century japanese streetmusic singer, Soeda Azembo, the "mute cicada".
