DATBLYGU "Hwgr-Grawth-Og", 7'' (UK, 1986)

Datblygu [datˈbləɡi  = develop] is considered one of the first and most emblematic welsh-spoken bands grown up in postpunk era - perhaps the most important.Vehicle of talented welsh musician and poet Dave R. Edwards, Datblygu were formed in Cardigan, Wales in 1982 with T. Wyn Davies in the initial line-up. The third core member, instrumentalist Patricia Morgan, joined in 1984, while Davies left in 1990.

Between 1982-1985 Datblygu released four cassettes. Their vinyl debut, the 4-track 7'' single "Hwgr-Grawth-Og" ( Anrhefn, 1986) attracted the attention of John Peel and was followed by several peel sessions  and three full albums, the last of which released in 1993.

Datblygu's music is influenced by post-punk, synth-pop, indie and experimental rock but the idiosyncratic songwriting of Dave Edwards coupled with the use of weird welsh language, gives it a unique character.

After a long inactive period Datblygu seem to show some action again. Recent works of theirs are two 7'' singles, released in 2008 and 2012.

Repost: NYAM NYAM "Hope of Heaven" (UK, 1984)

Perhaps they are mostly remembered nowadays for the single "Fate/Hate" they cut for the famous Factory (Benelux) label in 1984, Nyam Nyam`s though best argument against oblivion is the great LP "Hope of heaven" they released in same year on Beggars Banquet indie branch Situation Two.
Nyam Nyam`s melodic post punk knows here some fine piano driven acoustic moments, others tracks though have an experimental approach, especially the closing song "The Resolution" which moves, unexpectedly, their new wave romantism toward a haunted folkish land.

Nyam Nyam had one more Situation Two release: the EP "The Architect "(1985). After that they probably disappeared.

Update 2012: "Hope Of Heaven" (+ singles) has been reissued!

TINY TOWN Singles

Tiny Town was born in Brisbane; their former ego was the Supports. In early eighties they were transplanted to London where they made (from 1983 to 1986) four singles and the album "Little Tin God". Messthetics diy anthology have picked two Tiny Town tracks ('Know Better', 'Back To The Bow') for its prominent retrospective compilation series.

Tiny Town sound, velvety, tight, includes male-female vocals, keyboards, violin... and in spite of the obvious Go Betweens influence appears to keep its own corner in the garden of the endlessly fresh aussie essences.

members:
Peter Loveday (vocals, guitar), Geoffrey Titley (drums), Leigh Bradshaw (vocals, keyboards), Caroline Bush (vocals, violin), Cameron Allan (bass)...

discography:
Back To The Bow / Big Fish, flexi, 1983

Tongue Wrestling, The poet LYDIA TOMKIW

American poet Lydia Tomkiw was born in Chicago in 1959 and died in Arizona, aged only 48. Although her literature work was acclaimed in underground and even overground circles (one of her poems was included in the first edition of Best American Poetry 1988), a wider fame and recognition came via ALGEBRA SUICIDE, the band she formed along with her husband, Don Hedeker, circa 1982.
The fruit of couple's artistic collaboration was several albums, ep's, compilation tracks, and live audio-visual performances where Tomkiw's recitations and the new wavish guitar-synth  sounds of Hedeker (who played, with few exceptions, all the instruments), created a unique combination of direct, daily-life poetry and minimalistic pop music.

Jealous
Jealous of the human heart, so ugly yet exhalted;
Jealous of the blood it keeps.
Jealous of fast cars and hot colours,
Of monks with their vows of silence,
Of  leather wrapped around the skin of silly boys.
Jealous of sex and all its power,
Of romance and how it makes you swoon,
Of men who can grow beards or not,
Of women who can play the cello,
Jealous of love and how much it's desired.
Jealous of hair that comes and goes as it pleases,
Of weather, which no one can control,
Of infants who can sleep all day,
Of lacewings that don't sleep at all,
Of houseflies and their zillion eyes,
The windows to a zillion souls,
Jealous of saints and their tickets to heaven,
Jealous of birds and their simple brains,
Jealous of people who are naturally prompt,
Of those who have too much money,
Of those who are younger and more famous than I,
I am jealous of those are older and wiser,
Jealous of good liars and lotto winners,
Jealous of the vast sky above me,
Of the threat of hell below me,
I am jealous of the world and the beauty it holds.
Jealous of the color green, so fresh, so moldy,
So much the gorgeous God of envy.
 (from "Swoon")

Algebra Suicide's adventures lasted up to mid-90's. Their final work, "Tongue Wrestling", was made in 1994 (Widely Distributed Records), when Tomkiw and Hedeker had been already divorced.
The following year Tomkiw collaborated with artists as Edward Ka-Spell and Legendary Pink Dots and presented her solo album, "Incorporated", but in spite of her further artistic plans, she gradually went obscure...
Tomkiw spent the last period of her life next to her family in Phoenix, Arizona. She passed away in September 2007.

Algebra Suicide albums: "Secret Like Crazy" (compil. 1987), "Alpha Cue" (1990), "Swoon" (1991), "Tongue Wrestling" (1994)... plus "Real Numbers" (live, 1988) and "Summer Virus Night - Live in Germany in 1990" (2009).

"Look there, when I leave,  for
A trace of a glimmer,
A soft, lucid shimmer, too lofty to see;
It will be what's left of me after i'm gone"
Lydia Tomkiw

SHRUG "Septober Octember No Wonder" (UK, 1989)

Formed in 1985 in Middlesbrough by Robert Nichols and Richard PinkSHRUG have been mainly a live band known for their unsual gigs with three drummers, funny costumes, masks... Their first releases were the 12'' "Neville Wanless EP" (1988) , and the album "Septober, Octember, NoWonder" (1989). In 90's they recorded only some singles, but the band remained active and recently a new EP "Shrug... In A Quango" (2008) appeared. SHRUG's music combines the sharp punk/post punk attitude with garage influences; the social descriptions with strange lyrics and  psych-inspired themes.

THE SCIENTIFIC AMERICANS

Scientific Americans is one more nearly forgotten band of the post-punk era. Hailed from Massachusetts, they were developed musically next to the no-wave situation, influenced as well by bands as Suicide, Devo... After the first punkish recordings,''Beyond Rational Thought"(7'', 1979), their sound went more electronic, minimal pop and dub, without loosing its initial primitive, homemade, underground heart. Their "Load And Go!" cassette was released in 1983 on the legendary ROIR label. Other works of theirs, the one-sided flexi "Beyond Fiscal Distress" (Tekno Tunes,1980), a split flexi-disc with Graig Anderton (a release of Op Magazine), another cassette called "Some Dumb F**ks" (circa 1981)... Lots of unreleased and never performed live material has been also created before or after the end of the band by Sean Elias and Graig O'Donnell,  who (along with Jim Whittemore) were the long-run members of Scientific Americans.

Producing The Future: Adrian Sherwood & his On-U Sound label

 Adrian Sherwood

On-U artists circa 1993 [photo from skysaw site]

Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound is one of the most influential labels in the field where the mixing and producing technologies meet music. Sherwood's productions, marked by the heavy use of dub techniques (echo sounding, samples, effects) have created since 1981 (and especially for the first 10-15 years) a unique space of pioneering flavours backgrounded in post-punk, reggae, industrial, funk, dance, spoken word, experimental music. The huge influence of On-U can be detected in many music scenes and movements in previous decades, even in contemporary genres ranging from ambient, hip hop, house and dubstep to electronic jazz and world music.

Joining the celebration for the 30th Anniversary of On-U Sound label (1981-2011), LaFolieDuJour selects essential On-U productions:

LONDON UNDERGROUND "Watching West Indians In The Cold" (UK, 1982)

London Underground has been connected with the beginning of On-U Sound label. Their "Learn A Language" track was the B-side of On-U's debut release, a split 7'' single with New Age Steppers ("Fade Away" / "Learn  A Language"). The band, active the first half of the decade, developed a kind of white reggae-dub sound with influences from the avant-funk and alternative-dance air of post-punk era. Constant members were Martin Frederix (bass, guitar, vocals), Dan Sheals(drums), Kendall Ernest (bass) and On-U cofounder Pete Holdsworth (vocals), who later involved with reggae labels 'Pressure Sounds' and 'Green Tea'.
Following their second single "Train Of Thought" (1981), the three-track 10'' EP "Watching West Indians In The Cold", (fourth in the "On-U Disco Plates" series) is the step forward for the band ,as well the predecessor of their 1983 releases, "At Home With London Underground" (LP) , "Current Affairs Session" (mini-LP) and "Between The Lines" (7" single), which consist the main works of London Underground and also the last, as the band finished soon after.

VISITORS - Three singles

Electric Heat / Moth / One Line (1979)

Empty Rooms / The Orcadian / Visitors (1980)

Compatibility / Poet's End (1981)

These Visitors (without article) are from Scotland. Not unknown in their time and definitely better than the average obscure scottish post-punk/DIY band appearing, for example, in compilations like "Kilt By Death:The Sound of Old Scotland". Infos talk about their reputation as a good live band, and some Peel sessions(?), but... Short life, small output, no full LP. VISITORS gone and forgotten quickly...

TACTICS "Fatman / Shark Bed Rally" (AUS, 1985)

FATMAN

John saw it first he said it's strange
Fatman casts a shadow that's very thin and strained
All those years sleeping in the hall
Wrapped up tight we could hear his snore
Now these days are gone and they never will return
Things are not quite how they were before

Remnants of his reign strewn around the hall
Camera's on the fatman his rise and his fall
All those years shake that money tree
Everything you want everything for free

Now at night you hear all those lonely people calling
Because they can't remember nothing at all

Had land had water
He gave us life we gave him daughters
Jets on strings flew out his window
Had land had water
The reign of the fatman is coming to a close

TACTICS "Coat Tails / Committee Of Love" (AUS, 1986)

COMMITTEE OF LOVE

Driving down the road at night
Going to see you in my car so full of light
All around me fields made of ivory
Made of dreaming
Now i feel something real
A white light is how i feel
Committee of love

Hoping that you 're up there waiting for me
In your house behind the harbour
Where the boats [..],
touch each other
Cloud and shore
rub together
My tank is empty but i don't stop
10,000 hands push me along
Committee of love

Trees are grey and close at hand
One by one they open up and point me on
The clouds are blowing wild, wild horse
The night is bright, the moon is shining
From before and from behind
Everything i knew is cast aside
Committe of love

The moon goes flashing by
Everything is on the fly
Everything is working late
To help me on my way
Committee of love

2 is the starting number
3 is the world around you
4 are the things that hold you
1 are the things that love you
Only with each other will we find the things we want.
