HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS "Piano Piano" ( 1991)

This post is for Richard, friend of Materiali Sonori releases, who have asked to listen to this 1991 album. Beside his pioneering and famous works with edging kraut bands as KLUSTER, CLUSTER, HARMONIA etc., the edging composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius also has released numerous solo works, most of which are ambient-newage-modern classical orientated... and "PIANO PIANO" is one of them. Simple piano sounds and few electronics are enough, for the composer, to draw slowly (piano piano) melodic, quiet, impressionistic landscapes of sometime great sentimental immediacy.

LUIS RIZZO CUARTETO " Tristesse " (Materiali Sonori, 1990)

Argentinian composer and guitarist LUIS RIZZO is one of the contemporary avant-tango and tango-revival acting figures, a competent heir to a really great tradition built by tango monsters (and also Rizzo's masters) as ASTOR PIAZZOLLA, JUAN JOSE MOSALINI, OSVALDO MANZI...
In 70's Rizzo participates to Mosalini's avant ensemble "Guardia Nueva", in 80's he stays in france and plays a lot in Europe. In 1988 he releases, with a trio, the album"Tango d'hier et d'aujourd'hui" (label Circe, France) and two years later, he meets italian producer Marco Castellani and starts his long collaboration with label Materiali Sonori.
"TRISTESSE" is the first fruit of this collaboration, a collection of 13 pieces written by various composers (11 tangos, 1 milonga, 1 valse), with Rizzo on guitar, Susanna Rizzi on vocals and Cesar Stroscio, future leader of the very good ensemble ESQUINA, (see our post for label Materiali Sonori), on bandoneon.

HARMONIA ENSEMBLE "Nino Rota" (ITA, 1992)

Italian chamber music ensemble HARMONIA works at the crossroads of classical and modern musical languages. Initially a trio of ORIO ODORI (clarinet), DAMIANO PULITI (cello) and ALESSANDRA GAROSI (piano) formed in 1991 and debuted in Materiali Sonori label with a work dedicated to NINO ROTA.
Including both covers on Rota's famous themes (from "8 1/2", "La Strada", "Rocco e i suoi frattelli", "Il Gattopardo", "Amarcord"...) and original HARMONIA compositions, the album suggests perhaps a not so innovative but certainly a romantic and emotionally valuable view of the work of the great master, refreshing the pleasures of that unrepeatable cinematic magnificence.

ARTURO STALTERI " Flowers" (ITA, Materiali Sonori, 1995/1998)

"L`interminabile tempo mi adopera come un fruscio" -G.UNGARETTI

ARTURO STALTERI, a classical educated musician, was the man behind keyboards, percussions and vocals of italian prog legends PIERROT LUNAIRE. After two albums, the band paused activities and Arturo followed a solo way, released "Andre sulla luna" (1979), and "E il pavone parlo alla luna"(1987), both highly recommended electronic-prog-minimal-art-ambient LPs. "Flowers" originated from 1995; MATERIALI SONORI though, replaced first edition with a 1998, one-track-richer (sheltering sky theme) re-issue. A solo piano album where Arturo defines, in a way, the personal, favourite music universe that lies behind, around and inside his art. Names of Debussy, Glass, Sakamoto and also Chic Corea, Darryl Way gives an idea for the wide range of this impressionistic, minimal, modern, cinematic, endoscopic trip. Arturo adds to them compositions some fine pieces of his own, unifying a more complicated concept which suggests a multileveled, delightful and critical "reading" of the album.
Alone, facing piano`s black & white monochrome, as a witness of night & skylights ("un tasto bianco, un tasto nero..."), Arturo grows into his (and ours) nocturnal imagination, flowers with petals made of a moonlit touch.
FLOWERS. (80mb)
