The "Musique Actuelle" of AMBIANCES MAGNETIQUES (CAN)

A collective and a label, Montreal's AMBIANCES MAGNETIQUES, has been introducing us, for the last 25 years, to the most exciting adventures of the francophone canadian "avant" scene.

Initially founded just as a cooperative between the avant-gard artists & improvisors JEAN DEROME, RENE LUSSIER, JOANE HETU & friends.

First releases, RENE LUSSIER's debut work "Fin Du Travaill" (1983) and albums from ANDRE DUCHESNE, WONDEUR BRASS, LES POULES, LES GRANULES... attract a small interest, mostly among fans of RecRec sound, avant-prog and the likes.

In 1991 though, when JOANE HETU establishes the DAME distribution company, AMBIANCES MAGNETIQUES, taking the shape of a more regular label, extends its activities, adds its catalog many new artists... and gradually starts earning wider critical respect and international acknowledgement...

WONDEUR BRASS " Ravir" (CAN, 1985)

WONDEUR BRASS is the Canadian outfit that gave birth to LES POULES, a project known to our readers from the wonderful album "LES CONTES DE L`AMERE LOI" we posted some months ago.
The girls here are six (!), there are more wind instruments (saxophones, trombone) but the musical attitude remains more or less the same.
Free or theatrical improvisations, experimental new wave, humour, memories from retrojazz and french folk, innovative ideas and imaginative use of instruments show the subversive spirit under the influence of which these ladies make uncompromised music.
Until the end... when all those mellow moments that were crossing fragmentally the body of "RAVIR", release fully their emotional power through the sounds of "trois baleines blanches sur chinoise mer".

LES POULES "Les Contes De L` Amere Loi" (CAN, 1986)

Electronic jazz, sampledelic improvisation, abstract prog, avant new wave... or simply "LES CONTES DE L` AMERE LOI". At a time when most of much repeated experimental/R.I.O. tricks had started to become tedious, Canadian three-piece, LES POULES, applying an unconvectional imagination on use of synths, samples, drum machines, drums, voices and an alto sax... brought new air to the place. This extremely revitalizing approach owes much to the passionate and daring way by which the trio "extracts" music from sonar sources. Ready made sounds and plastic noises are dissolved perfectly into the acoustic spaces of "natural" instruments and the overall techno-weirdness is very live and emotionally warm.

LES CONTES DE L AMERE LOI is not a work untouchable by time, for the simple reason that added years extinguish its age. It is a timeless gem from three ladies, rather still active, who despite of small discography seem to keep on upsetting, (at the back of world attention), the avant genres.
