SHINY GNOMES "Orange" (GER, 1993)

A good garagy psych LP, the last of the "pure electric" phase, as SHINY GNOMES will give soon their music more trippy ambient-ethno-acoustic-cosmic directions ("MC CREATRIX", 1994) ... or even will go electronic ("WELTRAUMSERVICE", 1996).

The Germanic Internationalism of THE BLECH

Hubl Greiner, Rupert Volz (photo from THE BLECH site)

Founded by HUBL GREINER and RUPERT VOLZ, THE BLECH was one of the most interesting avant-rock bands came from Germany in 80's. Their love for unorthodox mixtures and subversive art marriages sent them to dig unsual (for the rock customs) territories, so that the jazz/electronic/alternative pop basis of their music is full of small (or big) curiocities of retro-germanism or eclectic internationalism: euroarabian motifs, third world percussive patterns, grotesque vocals, linguistic eccentrities, eastern european melodies, mad cabaret/Kurt Weillian marches and numerous other heterogenous elements, all treated with a distinctive, dadaistic passion for irony and seriousness.

THE BLECH were: HUBL GREINER (drums, piano, electronics, bass, percussion, various sounds), RUPERT VOLZ (vocals, brass instruments, trumpet, guitar, lyrics)... also contributed: THEROFAL (vocals, piano, bass), HELMUT BIELER-WENDT, SHIRLEY HOFMANN, ACHIM SCHMIDT, JENS VOLK and others...

WORKS:
The Blech, 1985
Zip Zip, 1987
Ich Wollte Meine Schuhe Zerschneiden, 1989
Liebeslieder, 1992
85-91 , 1993

...plus several other Greiner and Volz works as DER VOLZ, HULU PROJECT, etc...

ART & TECHNIQUE "Alea Jacta Est" , EP, (FRA, 1983)

Compared to the very interesting exploratory, minimal-electronic-industrial ambience of their debut (and best) LP "CLIMA X" (1981), the 1983 three track EP "ALEA JACTA EST" finds ART & TECHIQUE been more interested in cold synth-wave dance structures, while b-side track "Another Day An Other Life" is a more atmospheric song.

works:
CLIMA X (LP, Hi-Tec, 1981) reissued from SPALAX in 1998
PUTSCH IN MEMORIAM (7'', Hi-Tec, 1981)
DIABOLUS IN MECANICA (LP, Hi-Tec, 1982)
ALEA JACTA EST (12'' EP, Hi-Tec, 1983)

COSMIC SOUNDS : The Now Of Yesterday - Jazz In Eastern Europe

Giving an exposure to neglected jazz-funk-fusion treasures from eastern european vaults and being in parallel a vehicle for new musicians who work in jazzdance modernity, the London based english-serbian nu-jazz label COSMIC SOUNDS has been representing since 1999 one of the most remarkable efforts for bridging the gaps between local and global, east and west, past and future.

Serbian architect, dj, music collector ZELJKO KERLETA, founder of COSMIC SOUNDS, speaks for the birth of his label (2001 interview):

"Cosmic Sounds was the name of the radio program that I was running between 1996-98. I was running it from London but it was broadcast in Belgrade once a week. That was just a hobby because I am an architect and was working full time for the BBC Architectural Department. As an architect I was doing 3D animations as a presentations for my projects. I found them pretty dull being played without sound so one day I just decided to do a background music using recently discovered computer tools for it. That's how I did my "Running Fast" track. Timewarp heard it and licensed it for their compilation Warp Factor 2 in April 1999. Gilles Peterson picked it up, playlisted it in Straight No Chaser, also Ross Allen and many others. Of course that gave me a boost and I did the whole album "Space Runner". In the meantime I met one of the best trumpeters Dusko Gojkovic who generously gave me all his masters to look after them. Also I knew that some of my friends in Belgrade were doing their own stuff. As a collector I already made a bunch of compilations on CD-Rs (for my personal use) from my record collection, dedicated to each of Eastern European countries that I made because I always had a feeling that they were heavily neglected on collectors market and jazz scene in general and was hoping someday to release it throu someone. Having all that undiscovered music around me the logical choice was to start a record label and share all that with the public. Name for the label was taken from my ex-radio program. And that was it. First release came out in November 1999 and that was re-issue of Dusko Gojkovic's rare 10" record with Kenny Clarke from 1961.[...]"

REBBY SHARP "Into One Mouth And Out The Other" (US, 1989)

REBBY SHARP worked here with SHIMMY DISC boss, KRAMER, and TOM CORA, DAVID LICHT and FRED FRITH for her first (and only) solo LP, a work quite different from her releases with ORTHOTONICS.
Influenced by the avant-art-rock spirit of Rebby's collaborators and also focused on the creation of a poor-sounded atmosphere with references to primitive folk or retro-folk, "In One Mouth and Out The Other" can be seen retrospectively as one of those distant odd pre-announcements of the "weird-folk/lo-fi" genres of the recent years.
