PAUL ROLAND "Live in Germany 1995" (UK, 1996)

This strictly limited to 1000 copies album is the only, to date, series of solo performances Paul Roland released. It is, as himshelf says, "...the result of Fate`s hand on the mixing desk of life...", a document of Fate`s capricious will. 1995 Paul was invited to tour Germany as a special guest of The Convent, a band that, he admitted, hadn`t been familiar with ("...i had been assured they were a jolly decent bunch of chaps."). Two days before departure he learnt he was unable to bring other musicians as he had planned, but finally instead of pulling out, he decided "...to go alone and make the best of it."

And as it turn out, it was one of his most enjoyable tours; he made a lot of new friends...and so he issued, as a souvenir, these solo concerts...

For its clever selections and Paul`s fine performing shape, this live album could easily work out as another (unplugged is the fashionable word here) best-of compilation ...but neither this, nor its rarity is the reason this lies amongst his most particular works.Performing alone ( voice, guitar) Paul focused instinctly on the esoteric character of his songwriting, forcing the songs, in a way, to reveal their true original acoustic core.
So no matter if you have already got the studio versions of many of the gems here...Listen to this disc! You realise that Paul doesn`t need his finery to take you there...

as a long time admirer of his work i'm looking forward to hearing this. I've got the live in Italy CD from1989 [again a limited edition]. Recently I've read one or two articles by a Paul Roland and have wondered whether they are one and the same.
